LAST DANCE

Just as achingly earnest as DEAD MAN WALKING, and truly stupid as well. Cindy Liggett (Sharon Stone) is your basic white-trash murderess on death row. Rick Hayes (Rob Morrow) is a spoiled rich kid who takes up her cause as a sort of petulant personal crusade. This is the story of their doomed romance, a howler of an ill-conceived star vehicle that makes the glossy Susan Hayward melodrama I WANT TO LIVE! look like a minor miracle of realist restraint. Stone's Cindy, whose perfunctory Southern accent goes more often than it comes, is imperially slim and toned despite 12 years of prison swill and close confinement. We know she's reformed herself because she writes letters for the other inmates and is taking a correspondence course in art. Stone's much-ballyhooed bad haircut and coloring job are miraculously replaced at the moment of transcendent drama by her familiar sleek, golden coif. It's not even the film's final false note -- that would be Rick's sentimental journey to the Taj Mahal, symbol of Cindy's thwarted dreams -- but it may be the greatest: All pretense of grit is stripped away with the muddy color, revealing the shimmering artifice just beneath the surface. leave a comment
