Abbott and Costello's last film together sees Lou running a kiddie carnival and Bud as his gambling, debt-ridden buddy. Costello also has two adopted moppets whom the state consistently tries to seize from him due to his lifestyle. When the noble carny owner tries to help bail his buddy out of his illegal financial troubles, he soon finds himself the chief suspect in an investigation into the gang slaying of the local district attorney and in trouble with the mob. The jokes are labored and even director Barton, who had directed some of the team's finest work, can't hide the fact that Bud and Lou no longer wished to work together. Costello made one more film before he died at age 53 in 1959; Abbott made a weak attempt to continue in comedy with another partner but was unsuccessful. Although their work has not held up well over the years, their brilliant routine "Who's on First?" made it to baseball's Hall of Fame, where it is enshrined on a plaque. leave a comment
