A poor adaptation of Roger Zelazny's postnuclear holocaust novel of the same name, the film has Peppard, Vincent, and Winfield as the only survivors of an underground military complex blast after the holocaust. They set out across the country in two tanklike landmobiles to get to Albany, New York, which for some unexplained reason is the only place not destroyed by the bombs and which has normal people still alive there. Along the way they encounter giant scorpions, flesh-eating cockroaches (which devour Winfield), weird electrical storms, and bands of marauding hillbillies. They also pick up Sanda, a lone woman, and Haley, a rock-throwing teen. Though Sanda is the first woman the men have seen since before the war, there is no romance or sex introduced into the film. The convoy rides through weird weather and a freak tidal-wave flood and surfaces about two miles from Albany, where it is welcomed by the population. The film lacks any suspense or drama, and the special effects are not that special. leave a comment
