Alec Guinness stars in this British sea adventure set during the Napoleonic wars as Capt. Crawford of the HMS Defiant. Dirk Bogarde is the brutal Lt. Scott-Padget, whose cruel treatment of the crew has added fuel to their plan to participate in a fleet-wide mutiny against the British Navy. Crawford is unaware of Scott-Padget's behavior, but when the lieutenant inflicts a vicious punishment upon Crawford's midshipman son he begins to take notice.
