Venereal disease was a hot topic in 1937, and several films came out on the subject. The story here concerns a young married man who contracts syphilis, and infects his wife and child. The villain of the story isn't the disease itself but the public ignorance of it. The film is based on a French play by Eugene Brieux and is a remake of the 1914 film of the same name. Upton Sinclair adapted this film and set the story in America. DAMAGED LIVES, another film dealing with the same subject, was released a week before this one. leave a comment
