Dad

From the opening seconds of DAD, the music gets down to work, telling the audience what to think and feel about the images on-screen. And it's a good thing, since without it the resentment that passes as affection, the manipulation that masquerades as caring, the condescension that pretends concern would be laid bare for all to see. DAD is more concerned with covering things up than with revealing them. Jake Tremont (Jack Lemmon) is the title dad, now old and increasingly feeble. He's dominated by his resentful wife Bette (Olympia Dukakis), whose chronic sourness and frustration are meant to be seen as crusty lovableness. But when she suffers a heart attack, Jake is suddenly left to fend for himself. Into the picture comes son John (Ted Danson), a successful Wall Street high roller whose exploits previously left him little time for any of his family. DAD is supposedly based on William Wharton's novel, but writer-director Gary David Goldberg and executive producer Steven Spielberg have somehow managed to stand Wharton's best-seller on its head. Everything honest and hard-hitting in the book has been tastefully subverted, and the performances are scaled to meet the script's tiny demands. The film earned an Oscar nomination for its makeup. leave a comment
