D-Day The Sixth Of June: Review
D-DAY, THE SIXTH OF JUNE sets a love triangle amidst the havoc of WW II. Robert Taylor is Brad Parker, an officer assigned to London and working for an egocentric colonel (Edmond O'Brien, in a revealing, often grating performance), who longs to make a name for himself in combat. Parker's story is told in flashback as he awaits the sailing of the invasion armada to Normandy. He thinks back to his first meeting with Valerie (Dana Wynter), an English enlisted woman whose fiance, John (Richard Todd), is fighting in Africa. Valerie tries unsuccessfully to resist falling in love with Parker, who has a wife in the States. Their tryst is interrupted when John is furloughed after being seriously wounded and Valerie returns to him. When both men later participate in the D-Day landings, only one survives. This standard, well-made tale bogs down in spots but is enlivened by O'Brien's unmilitary, often bizarre conduct.
