Cyberworld: Review
Start with the claim that it's the first-ever animated 3-D film, and we have to say nuh-uh:
Lumber Jack Rabbit
presented Bugs Bunny in three dimensions in 1954. That may be quibbling, but since this 55-minute feature consists entirely of short clips worked into a framing sequence that features an annoying, smart-mouthed cybersprite named Phig (voiced by the annoying Jenna Elfman), it's not irrelevant. Three years in the making, this sampler might have a niche as the head-trippy laser light show of our day, if only IMAX theaters weren't always full of little kids on school trips. Phig is our guide through the Galleria Anamatica, a virtual, 3-D mall whose doors open to reveal various animated visions, some of them made as far back as six years: Apes pounding on computers in "Monkey Brain Sushi"; weird underwater creatures in "KraKKen: Adventures of a Future Ocean"; "Flipbook"'s giant animated armatures; flying metallic heads in "Liberation," set to the Pet Shop Boys song of the same name; a flying, Jules Verne inspired theater in "Tonight's Performance"; the rubbery-looking bugs of "Joe Fly & Sanchez Mostly Sports"; and two familiar sequences given a 3-D spin: the dance number from ANTZ and
The Simpsons
"Homer³" segment, first seen on a 1995
Treehouse of Horror
Halloween special. In the framing story, Phig discovers that the Galleria has bugs (computer bugs, get it?), a trio of animated creepy-crawlies named Frazzled (Matt Frewer), Buzzed, and Wired (both Robert Smith) all whom are creating havoc by devouring the mall's code. Phig's calls for technical assistance go unheeded (ha-ha-ha), so she has to deal with them herself. All the segments are technically polished (though a couple look disconcertingly like product-reel pieces designed to show off how well the animators can render tough subjects such as water or reflections on glass), but none offers much substance.
