Barely meriting a grade of "D," this slasher spoof is a retread of HEATHERS with generous borrowing from FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH; PRETTY POISON; and MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH tossed in. Brian Woods (Donovan Leitch, son of singer Donovan and brother of actress Ione Skye) a teen who killed his father, returns to his old high school after being released from a mental institution. William Carson III (Martin Mull), the lawyer who prosecuted Brian, is worried about the safety of daughter Paula (Jill Schoelen), and with good reason, since corpses start piling up at school. Is Brian up to his old tricks, or could the slasher be Paula's horny boy friend (Brad Pitt), the seedy school janitor (Robert Glaudini), or the lascivious principal (Roddy McDowall)? CUTTING CLASS does a nice job of concealing the killer's true identity, even as it leaves a trail of clues pointing to him. However, this sloppily directed, indifferently written black comedy fails to create sympathetic characters or even deliciously nasty ones. Yet, despite these limitations, Schoelen gives an appealing performance. leave a comment
