Whatever its shortcomings as an erotic thriller, Jane Campion's interesting deconstruction of the genre features a real change of pace for America's sweetheart Meg Ryan. She plays a New York City teacher who's being menaced by a brutal serial killer, and begins to suspect the man who should be protecting her — NYPD detective Mark Ruffalo — might also be trying to do her in. Ryan's remarkably good, but the film's real star is Fun City itself. Draped in post-9/11 anxiety and free-floating fear, the city hasn't appeared this threatening since the '70s.
