Balanced against acceptance at Harvard, friendship has its limits. Although buddies Jim (Matthew Lillard), Chris (Michael Vartan), and Rand (Randall Batinkoff) are near the top of their undergraduate class, these party animals desire sure-fire entree into Ivy League grad schools. Then they learn about one of their school's lesser-known policies: If a student kills himself, his or her roommates get an automatic 4.0. In short order, Jim prevails upon Chris to help him kill emotionally unstable Rand and make it look like self-destruction. When Rand's girlfriend Natalie (Tamara Craig Thomas) reports her pregnancy to Rand, he begins drinking heavily. As Chris vacillates, Jim helps his life-long buddy over a cliff. Or does he? Rand's body never surfaces. Before long, treacherous Jim dates Chris's girlfriend Emma (Keri Russell) and feeds the investigating police suspicions about Chris. After Natalie commits suicide, it's every man for himself. Having framed Chris for Rand's "murder," will Jim talk Chris into a walk off the cliff? Whose side is Emma on? Whereas other Gen-X flicks never find a suitable tone, this creepy entry affects one of smug nihilism and sticks with it to the very end. Armchair sleuths may not guess the major surprises, but they'll surely deduce that Rand is still alive when his corpse fails to materialize. Because this superficially cruel film feeds off twists, it would be unfair to reveal any more of its back-stabbing reversals, but suffice it to say that by the climax, one feels as if one has been watching pre-teens play Nietzschean dress-up. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
