1999, Movie, PG-13, 94 mins

Publishing CEO Stevenson Lowe (James Spader) wonders whether his merger with a media mogul will ruin his dignified family business. A procrastinator by nature, Stevenson also keeps Julia (Polly Walker), his beautiful main squeeze, at arm's length whenever she presses him for commitment. After Polly persuades him to purchase a brownstone, his vacillating nature is tested on a strange new front. This dream house is haunted. Although once in love, 1930's-era theatrical co-stars and paramours Max (Michael Caine) and Lily Marlow (Maggie Smith) bicker so much that they've remain trapped in their earthly abode. Only visible to Stevenson, the Marlows take different tacks in straightening out Stevenson's love life; Max encourages philandering, whereas Lily nudges him toward Julia. Can Lily bust up Julia's budding affair with eligible Will Dodge (Sam Shepard)? When's the last time you saw a benign romantic comedy about mischievous ectoplasm? Probably not since the sloppier but livelier HIGH SPIRITS (1988). As overseen by the once reliable Peter Yates (BREAKING AWAY), by the time this creaky farce stutters to a halt, you'll be rushing into the proverbial white light yourself. On stage, perhaps, a similar suite for poltergeists might succeed, with lots of well-timed slamming doors and comically arch acting, a la Blithe Spirit. But only Caine and Smith get into the proper spirit of things, dispensing stale bon mots as if they were epigrams worthy of Oscar Wilde leave a comment --Robert Pardi
