Nelly Kaplan's first feature chronicles the satiric exploits of Marie (Bernadette Lafont), a young country girl who sleeps with everyone in the nearby village but gets nothing in return. When her mother is killed in a car accident and the priest denies her a proper burial, Marie goes on the offensive and learns to use her sexuality to her best advantage, making her male callers pay for her services and gradually becoming financially independent. She then turns her skills to blackmail, buying a tape recorder and secretly preserving some otherwise private conversations with her clients. A VERY CURIOUS GIRL was a minor art-house success, in part because Pablo Picasso, of all people, drew comparisons between Kaplan's style and that of Luis Bunuel. Kaplan had come to the great artist's attention after she directed the documentary LE REGARD PICASSO, which earned a Golden Lion at Venice. (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
