HE'LL BE THE JUDGE OF THAT

It seems that torturing wannabe singers with backhanded compliments and full-frontal insults just isn't enough for Simon Cowell and American Idol producer Ken Warwick. Starting April 6 in L.A., they'll be conducting casting calls nationwide for a new NBC reality show called America's Got Talent. "We are looking for performers of all ages in every talent category in hopes of finding that next big name in lights," Warwick tells the Associated Press. Adds Cowell: "This is the show I've always wanted to make." (Funny — I thought that show was Cupid.) Gluttons for punishment can get audition details by visiting www.nbc.com and clicking on "casting."

Any chance Veronica Mars exec ...

Question: Any chance Veronica Mars exec producer Rob Thomas might bring on his former Cupid star, Jeremy Piven, for a cameo? After all, he's already used Paula Marshall and Jeffrey Sams on the show.

Answer: Let's ask Rob: "That idea has floated around my head quite a bit lately. I have not set those wheels in motion, but I'm awfully tempted. If I wake up and have a brainstorm about a cool way to get Jeremy, Paula and Jeffrey all into a great story line together, then I might give Jeremy a call." (Actually, he'll probably give Lloyd a call and he'll patch him through to Ari, er, Jeremy.) While we're on the subject of Rob T., don't forget to check out today's Insider for answers to all your burning questions about the new season.

First, as someone who has recently been converted to a fan of Entourage by Jeremy Piven's hysterical performance (I've been a fan of his since the late, lamented Cupid), I'd like to know what you think his chances are of winning an Emmy are. Second question: I agree with those who think Battlestar Galactica is a very good show. It's the second-best thing Sci Fi has ever done (behind only Farscape). However, I find the show unrelentingly grim and have a hard time watching sometimes. Do you think the tone of the show might endanger its chances of a long run? A little levity would go a long way, I think. Answer: First, Piven. Yes, I think he has an excellent chance. His was a true breakout performance in a show whose buzz is steadily building during a time when Emmy ballots are in play. He deserves it (although I'd also love Peter Boyle to get an Emmy finally and complete the Raymond cast's sweep), and I predict he'll win. As for Galactica ... read more
