Richard Attenborough, the producer-director of GANDHI, returns with another film of profound political significance. CRY FREEDOM is the story of the friendship between Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington), leader of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa in the 1970s, and Donald Woods (Kevin Kline), the white journalist who, with his wife (Penelope Wilton) and children, flees his homeland to publish a book telling the world of Biko's brutal murder at the hands of South African authorities in 1977.
