New York City cop Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is assigned to go undercover in the S & M subculture and find a maniac who is killing homosexuals. Purportedly a psychological view of a "straight" character's immersion in the sexual underworld, CRUISING depicts this world as irredeemably sick and
violent, and adopts the time-honored strategy of leering over its subject matter under the guise of "objective depiction." Viewers are spared nothing as Steve Burns undergoes degrading brutality after brutality; virtually nobody is portrayed sympathetically.
