This follow-up to 1999's teen-oriented revamp of LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES is neither shocking nor engrossing, because none of the cast members have the chops to play budding Machiavellis. Bounced from high school to high school, bad boy Sebastian Valmont (Robin Dunne), who's now a senior, has one saving grace: He loves his mother, a recovering alcoholic in rehab. Sebastian moves in with his womanizing father (David McIlwraith), for whom he has no respect, and his dad's filthy rich second wife (Mimi Rogers), and tows the line so he can lobby for improved care for his mom. Unfortunately, Sebastian's new stepsister, Kathryn (Amy Adams), is a manipulative bulimic who's developing into a scheming power broker just like her mom. Resolved to behave properly at the academy that he now attends with Kathryn, Sebastian gives Kathryn a wide berth and instead, Sebastian becomes infatuated with the headmaster's daughter, Danielle (Sarah Thompson), Kathryn's total opposite. In her tireless efforts to humiliate and banish the nouveau riche, Kathryn befriends a wealthy but clueless bumpkin named Cherie (Keri Lynn Pratt), the better to turn her into the town pump. At loggerheads with Kathryn over her vicious mind games, Sebastian doesn't flinch when his stepsister declares war on him, too. But while Kathryn's crusade to deflower and disgrace Cherie backfires, Sebastian grows frustrated with Danielle's virtuousness. Can a leopard like Sebastian really change his spots? Predicated on the proposition that it's never too early to practice swinish behavior, this trashy sleaze-fest makes CRUEL INTENTIONS — already a painfully dumbed-down shadow of the classic novel by Choderos De Laclos — seem a masterpiece by comparison: Its clumsy "bon mots" are like leftovers from a teenager's Dorian Gray-theme party. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
