Is there a car-racing movie worth its while that doesn't wind up at the Indy 500? Yes, a few, but most aim for that Memorial Day weekend, and THE CROWD ROARS is no exception. James Cagney is Joe Greer, an auto racer who fails to keep his kid brother, Eddie (Eric Linden), away from fast tracks and fast women. Before long, Eddie is involved with a floozy (Joan Blondell) and the brothers' animosity is played out on the track, where Joe's buddy Spud Connors (Frank McHugh) is killed while trying to keep the Greers' cars apart. Devastated, Joe quits racing, takes up drinking, and doesn't get behind the wheel again until Eddie is injured while racing in the Indy 500--whereupon Joe jumps into the car, takes over, and wins the race. Filmed at Indy, Ventura, and Ascot, THE CROWD ROARS gives a fairly realistic picture of auto racing, its script having been given the once-over by Billy Arnold, winner of the 500 in 1930. Cagney was on his way to developing his ultimate screen personality--aggressive, cocky, supercilious. Though Howard Hawks (who made some of the cinema's finest comedies) fails to allow Cagney or the film to find any real humor in the story, THE CROWD ROARS is an extremely enjoyable film anyway. leave a comment
