High adventure in the low jungles of New Guinea (much of the film was actually shot in Florida). Payne is the muscular, seafaring master of a good-sized ship working in the South Seas. Tucker and Lowery have a good use for that ship and arrange to have Payne framed so they can get the vessel. They want to use it to transport a shipment of gold aboard a plane, for which they have arranged a crash-landing in some shallow waters. The plane has a passenger, the curvaceous Fleming, who is rapidly becoming an alcoholic due to her bitterness over her husband's death in the war. Payne joins forces with Mowbray and Abbott, two funny con men, to find the gold, his boat, and Fleming. In the course of inhuman events, they must face the standard adventure fare: mad natives, big jungle cats, alligators, etc. They eventually locate the girl and the gold and must then run another native gauntlet before returning to safety. It's a fun picture but as memorable as last July 22nd's weather report. Fleming is luscious, Payne is strong and not silent enough, and Tucker is just too amiable to take seriously as a villain. leave a comment
