Set partly in New York's Lower East Side, where director Silver's excellent tale of immigrant Jewish life in the 1890s, HESTER STREET, also took place, this gentle romantic comedy is a fairy tale populated with real people. Irving stars as an attractive, intelligent Jewish woman in her early 30s who works in a classy Midtown bookstore. Although she lives on the Upper West Side, she frequently treks down to her old neighborhood south of Delancey Street to visit her grandmother, Bozyk. Appalled that her treasured granddaughter has not found a husband, Bozyk engages matchmaker Miles to find Irving a husband, and Miles comes up with pickle merchant Riegert. Although Riegert proves to be a good-hearted soul, Irving can't see herself spending her life with a guy who sells pickles, and she rebuffs him. The remainder of the film recounts Riegert's efforts to win her. Guided by director Silver's gentle but sure hand and benefiting from strong performances by the leads, this is a sweet, funny movie that doesn't exploit the sentimentality of its story. Silver has nicely captured Lower East Side Jewish life and the conflict between tradition and change while also offering resonant slice-of-life portraits of New York. leave a comment
