Crooner: Review

A nasty swipe at those who hunger for success at any price that was panned viciously by some contemporary critics. Loosely paralleling Rudy Vallee's rise, it stars Manners as Teddy, a college saxman who is instantly boosted to stardom when his manager makes him a vocalist. His overblown ego gets the best of him and sends him into a tailspin back to the cellar. A slick script and well-honed direction give this one its sting. It predates Schulberg's similar A FACE IN THE CROWD by 25 years.
