This interesting film about the German army regrettably suffers from preachiness and anachronistic content (its release was contemporaneous with the rise of the Nazis and corresponding anti-German sentiment). Primarily an opus of loyalty and pacifism, it has no real winners or heroes. Two enthusiastic American lads join the German air force, only to learn that they will soon be battling against the boys from their homeland. Bob Wilson (Ben Lyon) decides to remain loyal to America and fight on its side; Fred von Bergen (James Bush), however, remains loyal to his German ancestry and continues flying with the Luftwaffe. Before long he is shot down and killed, leaving Bob to move in on his dead pal's fraulein, Alida (Sari Maritza). Back in the States, Fred's mother (Bodil Rosing) delivers an antiwar eulogy that still rings true today. Erich von Stroheim is awesome as a granite-hard, sadistic captain. leave a comment
