Though this is not an unpleasant film, and it has several genuinely funny moments, it was a major disappointment. It was the follow-up film for both director Sam Raimi, whose debut feature, THE EVIL DEAD, was one of the freshest and scariest independent horror films in years, and screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen, the whiz kids who made the very successful BLOOD SIMPLE. Louise Lasser witnesses the murder of her husband's business partner by Paul L. Smith and Brion James, a pair of exterminators. Her husband, Edward R. Presser, has hired the men, but when they realize they have been seen, they casually add her to their list of people to kill. A lot of energy is evident, but the film misses the target by too wide a margin to be as devastatingly deflating of a genre as AIRPLANE! or as pointed a satire as Andy Warhol's BAD, which this film superficially resembles at times. Lasser is good as a dimwitted victim, and the two hit men, James and Smith, are hilarious as they gleefully rack up their body count. The filmmakers freely admit that comic books were one of their major inspirations, and at times the film shows it. leave a comment
