Crime Wave: Review

The title tells it all in this low-budget film. Nelson, forsaking his dancing shoes, is an ex-convict now on parole and trying to make a success out of the straight life with wife Kirk. Hayden is a tough cop in the mold of Kirk Douglas' character in DETECTIVE STORY. He hates criminals with a passion and trusts no one who has ever been "inside." Buchinsky (later to be know as Charles Bronson), De Corsia, and Carey are three escapees from San Quentin who come to Nelson's home to hide out. To keep madman Carey away from Kirk, Nelson agrees to help them. Meanwhile, Hayden is keeping an eye on Nelson. A tip from fink Novello (who is promptly killed by Buchinsky) brings Hayden to Nelson's home. Carey is also killed and Buchinsky and De Corsia take Nelson and Kirk to Chinatown, where they stay undercover while planning their big score, a bank robbery. However, Nelson leaves a clue behind in his house and Hayden tracks the crooks down. The final sequence takes place at a bank, where the cops are lying in wait for the crooks. A big shootout and a happy ending follow. Nelson is most believable in a nonhoofing role. He continued that side of his career, and then went into directing, with some success. Director de Toth was not particularly known for film noir projects like this one (his only other stab at the genre was PITFALL). The same producer/director/writer team responsible for CRIME WAVE also collaborated on HOUSE OF WAX, which was Bronson's tenth picture and the one that brought him to national prominence as Vincent Price's personal Igor-like assistant. leave a comment
