A follow up to the movie DEAD END has the Dead End Kids in another adventure. This one attempts a commentary on how reform schools teach youngsters criminal behavior instead of reforming them. The boys are thrown into the Gatesville Reformatory, which teaches discipline at the end of a cat-o'-nine-tails, and settle down to make the best of the bad bargain handed them by the juvenile court. Bogart, who is machine-gunned at the end of DEAD END, plays the deputy commissioner of corrections who comes to Gatesville on a surprise inspection. He fires the cruel and corrupt warden and introduces humane methods of dealing with the boys. They in turn save Bogart from a political double-cross. The boys are paroled for good behavior and the reformatory is truly reformed. Remade in 1939 as HELL'S KITCHEN. Based on THE MAYOR OF HELL. leave a comment
