A comic murder mystery based on a play by Ellery Queen and Lowell Brentano, the film follows three playwrights who, having just collected a $500 advance for a mystery play, gather in an apartment to write. A drunk from across the hall enters the apartment and passes out. The three writers
pretend he has been murdered, and summon the men he has blackmailed. While the suspects are being interrogated, someone actually does kill the drunk. The playwrights solve the mystery, find the murderer, and have something to write a play about.
