The Creature From Black Lake

1976, Movie, PG, 95 mins

Despite its obvious handicaps, this ultra-low-budget Bigfoot movie--a subgenre that always seem to suffer from a lack of production funds--is fairly watchable. When a Bigfoot is reported to be stomping around a Louisiana lake, two college students load up their van and head off to confirm the sighting. Entertaining performances by Elam (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST) and Taylor (BONNIE AND CLYDE) contribute greatly to the entertainment value. A hint of the production's lightheartedness can be found in a cast list that includes a sheriff named after then-new First Brother Billy Carter. Cinematography fans take note: this film is an early effort from Dean Cundey, who would go on to shoot such John Carpenter movies as HALLOWEEN; THE FOG; ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK; and THE THING--and who would later work with Robert Zemeckis on BACK TO THE FUTURE and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. leave a comment
