Pro football Hall of Famer and one-time University of Wisconsin athletic director Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch plays himself in this film biography that begins with his introduction to football in high school. It follows the two-time All-American through his illustrious collegiate career at Wisconsin and Michigan and on into the pro ranks--first with the Chicago Rockets of the All-American Football Conference and then with the Los Angeles Rams. Doctors tell Crazylegs that injuries he received while with the Rockets will end his career, but he fights back and, shifting from the backfield to end, goes on to NFL glory. Lloyd Nolan narrates the film, and a number of contemporary Rams appear, including quarterback Bob Waterfield (who also appeared in JUNGLE MANHUNT and TRIPLE THREAT and was once married to Jane Russell). A considerable amount of actual footage of Crazylegs in action is effectively incorporated in the film. Hirsch was rather old to be playing himself as a youngster, but he proves to be a convincing actor and would later star in THE UNCHAINED (1955), playing an inmate at an experimental prison, as well as in ZERO HOUR (1957), an aviation drama. A favorite with Hirsch admirers, CRAZYLEGS, ALL-AMERICAN will have a limited appeal for others. Film editor Warburton recieved an Oscar nomination. leave a comment
