CRASH
starstarstarstar
The term "autoerotica" takes on new meaning as dreamily disaffected couple James and Catherine (James Spader and Deborah Unger), who fuel their own sex life with extramarital escapades involving car crashes, and soon get sucked into a carnal demolition derby. This sex a la director David Cronenberg: sleek, strange and ice cold. Read the complete review for Crash

Which fall pilots would you ...

Question: Which fall pilots would you deem worthy of my time?

Answer: I finished watching the last of the pilots over the weekend and I have fantastic news: For the first time in recent memory, the good fall shows easily outnumber the bad ones — at least based on the pilots I saw. As Desperate Housewives taught us, the second and third episodes tell us much more about a show's creative bones than a season premiere. With that said, here are the fall offerings that have the most FauxVo potential.

* Vanished (Fox) and Kidnapped (NBC): Among the things these two thrillers share in common: They both& read more

The Oscar voters seem to go ...

Question: The Oscar voters seem to go out of their way to nominate the "little guys." Felicity Huffman was nominated for Transamerica even if the movie made less than $3 million at the box office. Why can't it be the same for the Emmys? If the Oscar voters were anything like Emmy voters, then Crash or Brokeback Mountain wouldn't even be on the list of nominations. I am especially nervous about the category for best actress in a comedy: I agree with you that Marcia Cross deserves to win. She makes the transition from a psychotic alcoholic to a caring mother look so freakin' easy! Unfortunately, I have a feeling that Teri Hatcher will also be nominated. She's a great actress, but there are actresses who are more deserving. Huffman is always great, but this season of Desperate Housewives belonged to Cross. Mary-Louise Parker will probably get nominated, too. Other nominees I'd like to see are Lisa Kudrow — sadly, I think the Emmy voters might pass on her, and though she was on HBO, her ... read more

I've read that the ...

Question: I've read that the Oscar-winning Crash is being adapted as a TV series. I'm excited by this because while it wasn't perfect, I liked the movie, and with its abundance of interesting characters and plotlines, it will be intriguing to see where they go with it from here. But I'm wondering where such a series would go; the best-picture win might make it attractive to TV execs, but the movie had so much touchy language and subject matter that I'm not sure what network would be brave enough to air it in this age of heavy fines. What are your thoughts on the possibilities for the show and where it might end up? Answer: If that report turns out to be true, and not just part of the euphoric post-Oscar buzz (I have no idea if this will ever happen), I can't imagine it would go anywhere but to one of the more adventurous cable networks. Not just because of the adult tone and the racially charged material, but because (Oscar aside) it's not especially commercial. And then there's the ... read more

It seems that many critics ...

Question: It seems that many critics are not happy with the Academy for failing to recognize Brokeback Mountain as the right film at the right time. What are some other famous snubs that the Academy is still embarrassed about? Thanks.

Answer: I personally think the Academy is shameless, and I've never ever heard — nor do I think I ever will — an official spokesperson concede that its membership made a big fat mistake giving the best-picture Oscar to one film rather than another. But I think there's a pretty overwhelming consensus among everyone else who cares that calling Ordinary People — a genuinely good movie, I hasten to add — the best motion picture of 1980 when it was up against Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, which is widely con read more

SNL Vet Weighs In on the New Buzz

Despite seeing presidential hopeful John Kerry (and thus his portrayal) get snubbed in 2004, Seth Meyers has never stopped being a major part of the mix at NBC's Saturday Night Live (Saturdays, duh, at 11:30 pm/ET). As he prepped for this weekend's show, Meyers — now best known for his bits as haranguing hubby Dan Needler and the Appalachian Emergency Room receptionist, as well as for his impressions of Hugh Grant, Sean Penn and Anderson Cooper — found a few minutes to talk to TVGuide.com about SNL's plans for guest host Matt Dillon, the "real" Natalie Portman and the crazy-delicious digital-shorts read more
