CRAFT, THE
starstarstarstar
This reasonably stylish fantasy bestows supernatural powers on the hip-but-alienated SoCal teens familiar from HEATHERS and CLUELESS. Sarah (Robin Tunney), a social pariah at snooty St. Benedict's Academy, hooks up with fellow outcasts Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Rochelle (Rachel True) and Bonnie (Neve Campbell of TV's Party of Five). They form a witches' coven as a goof; inevitably, their playful incantations summon up Dark and Mysterious Forces, enabling them to wreak spectacular revenge on various persecutors. The feminist subtext here is intentional -- the credits list a Wiccan priestess as witchcraft consultant! -- but any subtlety soon gets lost in the thud and blunder of special effects, trendy music and a predictable Hollywood-style climax. leave a comment
