CRACKING UP
starstarstarstar
Fueled by good hit of crack, performance artist cum stand-up comedian Danny Gold (Matt Mitler) can drive everyone else offstage with the sheer manic energy of his act. Danny's effervescent talent for twisted celebrity impersonations, like Robert De Niro doing Henny Youngman, gains him the attention of an influential manager, who agrees to represent him despite the loose-cannon factor. Danny's problem is that he lives life at this high speed all the time, and he can't stand to see things go smoothly. Just strutting around the East Village or falling in love becomes a another chance for him to perform. So when promising auditions and actual job offers start coming in, Danny implodes and goes on a binge that only ends when he gets shot at a crack den. Mitler -- who wrote, directed, edited and stars in the film -- plays Danny as pure id, with no sense of barriers, propriety or limits. Mitler's gamble, like his alter ego's, is that no one can resist looking at a wreck in progress. But without any real story to mitigate the shenanigans of its warbling, hustling, opportunistic leech of a protagonist afflicted with chronic performitis, this film is, frankly, an ordeal. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
