This American production filmed in Paris casts three stars in dual roles in two different stories. Both stories involve love triangles, which eventually overlap. In the first, Welles is a boorish construction worker married to Greco, who is having an affair with laborer Dillman. Greco's passion for Dillman is insatiable, to the point that she carries on the affair in the same room as her two sleeping children. Eventually, she and Dillman kill Welles (while he is asleep in the kitchen). In the second tale, Dillman is a hot-shot lawyer, again sleeping with Greco, who is again married to Welles--this time out a very successful attorney and Dillman's mentor. The plots dovetail when Dillman-the-lawyer is hired to defend Dillman-the-killer and Greco-the-killer; Welles-the-lawyer eventually dies of a heart attack, shocked by his discovery that his protege and his spouse have been having an affair. The poor adulterers are sent to prison, while the rich ones remain free. Fleischer and Zanuck must have been attempting to make a point about justice, poetic or criminal, but if so this point is lost. The film was written by Zanuck under a pseudonym. leave a comment
