A dislikable entry produced with the participation of the Canadian Film Development Corporation in 1981 under the title DREAMWORLD but released regionally in the US in 1984. Conaway (the aspiring actor from TV's "Taxi" series) is an enterprising millionaire who has made a fortune in the high-tech industry. He surrounds himself with electronic gadgets and robots but soon finds another interest when he is introduced to the gorgeous Ferris through a traffic accident. She's trying to find fame and fortune in the glamorous world of modeling but so far has had no luck. Moneybags Conaway, however, buys the modeling agency she works for and then sets his sights on turning her into a star--"The Dreamworld Girl--the face of the 80's." The road to stardom is paved with money-grabbing freaks, sexual misfits, unscrupulous fashion photographers, and a deceitful business partner. The latter comes in the form of Welsh, an associate of Conaway's who tries to tumble his empire. By the less-than-spectacular finale the only thing that tumbles is the film itself. It resorts to every cliche known, insults most creatures with an intelligence level higher than that of a newt, and bores its audience to tears. The film's only saving grace is the hint of a romance between Conaway (normally an impressive actor) and Ferris--but even in this instance nothing ever develops past the embryonic stage. COVERGIRL is as shallow as its high-gloss title and will, it is to be hoped, do nothing but gather dust on the shelves of video stores. leave a comment
