Dennis O'Keefe is an insurance investigator who has come to a small town to look into the death of one of its citizens. The deeper he digs, the harder it gets as it seems the town is covering up and doesn't want the truth known. The man who was killed was a rat and a bully and the report said it was suicide, but O'Keefe doesn't believe it. We finally realize why the town is keeping things under wraps when we learn that the dead man was killed by a local hero. The killer himself, a doctor of the highest quality, is now also dead of a heart attack and the town would like to keep the story that way. O'Keefe falls in love with local Britton while he's investigating, and Bendix, who appears to be a lazy sheriff, wishes the Irishman would just get the hell out of there. This might have been a dandy story in the manner of BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK, which also has to do with the investigation of a death in a small town. But they missed the boat with languid direction and a script that threw light jabs when it should have gone for a knockout punch. leave a comment
