Harrowing peer rivalry in the name of love. Claude Chabrol's second feature deals with the contrast between two cousins studying law in Paris. Blain is the country bumpkin at odds with the decadent, city-bred Brialy. They compete for the same girl, and in the end Blain destroys Brialy. A major film of the French New Wave that provides a grim, clear-eyed look at the cynicism of youth, this is not to be missed. leave a comment
