David Niven stars in this taut courtroom drama as Maj. Carrington, a celebrated war hero shoved into a nowhere position during peacetime. Plagued by financial troubles and a nagging wife (Margaret Leighton), Carrington tries without success to get the War Office to reimburse him for his expense account. When the pencil-pushing commanding officer, Lt. Col. Henniker (Allan Cuthbertson), refuses to process Carrington's request, the major is forced to "borrow" from the till. Henniker is outraged and orders a court martial, during which it is revealed that Carrington had an affair with a young female officer, Capt. Alison Graham (Noelle Middleton), who tried to cover up her lover's theft. When this is disclosed, Carrington's wife gets her revenge by falsely testifying against her husband. The compelling courtroom drama is augmented by a healthy cynicism concerning the treatment of war veterans. leave a comment
