During joint maneuvers with the 6th Fleet, Petrov (James Horan) orders his mercenaries to commandeer the Odessa, a Russian submarine. Having already killed most of the original crew back on land, these apolitical thugs hold the Odessa for ransom. Keeping his minions uninformed, extremist Petrov plans to fire the sub's nuclear warheads at six Soviet cities, blame the devastation on separatists, and take advantage of the ensuing chaos to reunify Mother Russia. After the corpses of the real crew members are discovered in a deep freeze and Petrov's evil intentions become known, the Yankee brass must quickly come up with a plan of attack. When the sub-nappers request emergency medical aid, the US Navy sends medically trained operatives Fuller (Michael Dudikoff) and Swain (Alexander Keith). Without tipping their hand, it's up to them to pick off the bad guys and crack Petrov's countdown code before their naval superiors decide to end the impasse by blowing up the Odessa — and all aboard. Muscular direction and buoyant lead performances make this one of the splashier Tom Clancy-esque adventures of recent vintage. Fortunately, there's no need to clear away the macho cobwebs when Michael Dudikoff's around. Unlike his enervated peers (Jeff Speakman, Olivier Gruner, and Don "The Dragon" Wilson), Dudikoff hasn't lost his enthusiasm for kicking butt, and this smorgasbord of bone-crushing on the high seas should satisfy his fans. In addition to the game of hot potato played aboard the vessel, Steve Latshaw's well-constructed screenplay includes a complementary subplot about Petrov's liaison at the Russian Embassy that ably demonstrates the intricacies of espionage. Refusing to pad its running time with techno-babble, the whole production stays aloft due to the teamwork of Dudikoff and Keith, who make beautiful kick-boxing music together. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
