Hungarian director Pal Erdoss combines a domestic drama with an expose on the struggles of being an entrepreneur and provides a fascinating glimpse at family life and private business behind the Iron Curtain. Young family man Karoly Eperjes works as a bus driver for the community co-op. Determined to provide a better standard of living for his wife, Erika Ozsda, and their young son, Eperjes goes into business for himself and bids on a truck soon to be on the local auction block. His wife is very enthusiastic about her husband's plan and looks forward to having her own house. Eperjes wins the right to purchase the truck, and the next few months are filled with hard work and dreams of a new home. The couple's good fortune does not last, however, and when winter comes, Eperjes finds freelance work more difficult to come by. COUNTDOWN offers a bleak view of the realities of private business in Hungary. Erdoss traveled across Hungary, talking with many entrepreneurs, and the interviews provided the basis for the film. The performances in COUNTDOWN are compelling, with Ozsda and Eperjes taking top honors. leave a comment
