Ossie Davis made his directorial debut with this flashy adaptation of the Chester Himes novel. Raymond St. Jacques and Godfrey Cambridge star as a pair of plainclothes cops investigating a "Back to Africa" campaign run by a shady preacher (Calvin Lockhart). The film, filmed on location in Harlem and a precursor to the blaxploitation genre, is fast and furious and lot of fun, but not for delicate tastes.
