Chinatown is once again a metaphor for big-city corruption, but this richly stylized thriller from James Foley has something new to offer: a Chinese hero. Chow Yun-Fat stars as a New York City cop who's squeezed by prejudice from both sides. His fellow cops distrust Chinese people, while Chinatown's residents clam up in the presence of cops of any color. He and his ill-equipped partner (Mark Wahlberg) are assigned to the C-town beat, where drugs, prostitution, gambling and the brutal exploitation of recent immigrants are a way of life.
