A perverse and offbeat film that pits cop Keitel against Lydon, a demented cop killer, in a sadomasochistic psychological battle. Keitel wants information on a murder Keitel admits to committing--initially Keitel doesn't believe his story--but the killer refuses to oblige. Instead, Lydon turns the tables on his captor, taunting his abductor to abuse him further. For days Keitel keeps Lydon locked in an apartment. Although Keitel continues to beat him, it is the twisted cop who becomes increasingly tortured by Lydon's attitude and his refusal to defend himself against the violence. A memorable film that is interesting not for its plot (which is hopelessly complex) but for the strange tension between the characters. Keitel is exceptional as the berated captor turned victim, and Lydon is simply frightening. The perversions and violence in CORRUPT are essentially the same as (although more graphic than) those in certain film noir entries. Keitel's mind twists and turns in the name of the law in a way not unlike Ralph Meeker's Mike Hammer in KISS ME DEADLY. Lydon, the manipulative psychological oppressor, has his roots in Ann Savage's Vera of DETOUR (1945). For those who may not be versed in rock-'n'-roll history, Lydon came to fame as Johnny Rotten, the hate-spewing purveyor of destruction who was the idolized lead singer of punk rock's Sex Pistols. leave a comment
