Karloff stars as Dr. Thomas Bolton, a humanitarian London doctor who is attempting to develop a feasible anesthetic for the pain and suffering of surgery in the days when hospitals were like torture chambers. Unfortunately, he experiments on himself and slowly becomes addicted to drugs. Thinking he has found a proper anesthetic, he performs a demonstration of his pain-killing gas in an operating theater full of physicians and students. Unexpectedly, the gas wears off too soon; the patient awakens during the operation and bolts from the table, attempting to attack the audience. Karloff is fired from his position and begins to become desperate for drugs, now that his access to them is cut off. In a seedy tavern, he meets shady gravediggers De Wolff and Lee, who sell cadavers to hospitals. They lure Karloff into their scheme by offering to supply him with drugs if he will sign phony death certificates for them. The doctor reluctantly agrees but soon finds himself embroiled in a murder. Shot back to back with THE HAUNTED STRANGLER, CORRIDORS OF BLOOD was produced in England in 1958 but wasn't released in the US until 1962, after bit player Lee had become a horror film superstar in his own right in the excellent Hammer films. Although this film is surprisingly gruesome, Karloff maintains his dignity throughout and contributes yet another memorable and sympathetic performance. leave a comment
