The Coroner

1999, Movie, R, 75 mins

Given her crusade to rehabilitate hookers, attorney and social activist Emma (Jane Longnecker) is duly appalled by a string of prostitute murders. Little does she know that theculprit is now stalking her! Fond of videotaping the death throes of his victims, L.A. County Coroner Leon (Dean St. Louis) kidnaps Emma and reminds her that she tried to kill herself at fourteen. A self-appointed angel of death, Leon targets women who've unsuccessfully attempted suicide. Unlike his former captives, however, Emma is no shrinking violet. After escaping, she's unable to convince sexist cops of her ordeal. At one point, the police even arrest her for harassing Leon, who's known as a family man and reputable public servant! Turning the (dissecting) tables on him, Emma takes Leon prisoner, but her boyfriend, fearing for her sanity, interrupts her vigilante justice. Even given the low standards of direct-to-video productions, this lousy gore flick deserves a low spot on the rental totem pole; its queasy combination of bloody splatter and campy shenanigans will leave anyone with an iota of taste reaching for Alka-Seltzer. Because the writing, directing and production values are so execrable, you can't even enjoy this frightmare on its own sadistic level, and compared to its amateurish cast, the members of Ed Wood's repertory seem like candidates for RADA. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
