Blake is a loser from the Deep South. Rampling, doing her best to disguise her British accent with a cornpone overlay, is his wife. He's selfish, arrogant, biased, and annoying. She is patient and long-suffering. Together, they make for as unattractive a couple as could be found on any screen. Producer Geller so hated the treatment accorded this movie by Aubrey, MG mogul in charge, that he removed his name from the screenplay and attempted to take it off as producer but could not, according to the contract. Blake has this cherry car that he loves and spends more time with than he does with his wife. She takes a job working for Johnson, and Blake gets jealous and accuses the two of infidelity. A fight ensues, and soon Blake is wanted by the police. During a chase Blake's gorgeous car is whacked and rapidly begins to deteriorate.e winds up driving it in a demolition derby and destroying it altogether. Nobody wanted to take credit or blame for this movie. Price, who got solo writer credit, claims that very little of what he wrote remains, and the connecting material that explaining why Blake's character was the way he was eventually was edited out. Director Horn did not have much opportunity to put the sort of humor he was so good at into this film. Horn's best job, before his early death, was directing the TV pilot of "Wonder Woman," with Linda Carter. Geller also died young--in a plane crash with ABC-TV executive Steve Gentry. They were practicing takeoffs and landings in the Santa Barbara area and evidently misinterpreted a radio signal, turning the plane in the wrong direction and slamming into the side of a mountain. Price went on to become a successful soap-opera writer. He was once part of "The Texas Trio," three well-known Lone Star State writers--Price, Jack Sowards (STAR TREK, TWO), and David Westheimer (MY SWEET CHARLIE, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS)--who all had offices in the same small building in Beverly Hills. In that building at the same time were well-known TV writers Budd Grossman, Martin Ragaway, actress-novelist Joanna Barnes, novelist John Sherlock, screenwriter Karen Raskind, playwright Ben Starr, and five others who came and went. Price was one of the many writers who would be called in for summit meetings when one of the other writers was stuck on a story and needed help unsticking the problems. That was before he wrote the screenplay for this movie, unfortunately. Had he been able to brainstorm while making CORKY, many of its problems might have been solved. leave a comment
