Overshadowed by SEVEN's smashing success, this well-crafted serial killer picture is less graphically gruesome and more likely to appeal to women (protagonists Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver are tough, feisty professionals, and no one gets murdered with a sex toy). The setup is ingeniously straightforward: Someone is reenacting the crimes of celebrity serial killers of the past, down to the most apparently insignificant detail. In need of help, police detective Hunter turns to psychologist Weaver, an expert on serial murder who's become an agoraphobic boozer since she was attacked by a smitten psycho (Harry Connick Jr.). Aside from some effective suspense sequences, the film's strengths lie in the relationship between the heroines, which is well developed and plausible by genre standards. leave a comment
