Debonair vaudeville marksman Milland hides his identity as a Confederate army officer wanted by the Union army on a theft charge. Though the Civil War is over, southerners ask him to aid them in their fight, but he declines. Undercover, he schemes to trick the guys who are after him and ends up wooing Lamarr.
