The Cooler: Review

It's Vegas, baby, and if the material is a little familiar, strong performances and co-writer/director Wayne Kramer's eye for detail lends it all a flavor all its own. In the temple of gambling where luck is more precious than love or money, Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) oozes the stuff — bad luck, to be sure, but that can be good for casino managers like Shelley Kaplow (Alec Baldwin), who employs Bernie as a "cooler." Bernie spreads his bad mojo around Kaplow's down-at-the-heels Shangri-La, putting the freeze on the hottest winning streak before the casino gets stuck with making a big payoff. Bad-luck charm Bernie (William H. Macy) works as a "cooler"- his very presence can ice a red-hot winning streak before the house gets stuck with a big payoff - and has almost paid his debt to slimy Vegas casino manager Shelley Kaplow (Alec Baldwin) when love walks in and his plans go out the door. Writer-director Wayne Kramer's stylish fable features smooth as silk performances -- watch for Little Shop of Horrors star Ellen Greene as a hard-bitten bartender with a cigarette glued to her lip -- and enough sleazy neon atmosphere to drown in. Per Variety, producer brothers Sean and Bryan Furst (The Cooler) have sold to the CW network Beta Males, a single-camera comedy revolving around a trio of guys coping with their lives as domestic caretakers, while their girlfriends and wives bring home the bacon.... Fox has granted a 13-episode order to David E. Kelley's The Wedding Store, a romantic comedy about "wedding planners dedicated to having their clients live happily ever after — or at least until they get to the parking lot." (OK, that alone made me snicker.) Per Reuters, Wedding Store was inspired by a pilot penned in 2004 by Kelley and Friday Night Lights' Jason Katims, then for ABC. read more
