[1991, Movie, NR, 92 mins]
Convicts: Review
Static, portentous declaiming on a turn-of-the-century Texas plantation, based on a play by upper-middlebrow favorite Horton Foote. Soll Gautier (Robert Duvall), a drunken farmer who uses black convicts to work his land, rambles incoherently, pretty much without a pause, as a wide-eyed, possibly feebleminded 13-year-old (Lukas Haas) listens. There may be plot developments, but we missed them while we were at the concession stand. Toyomichi Kurita's golden-hour camerawork, however, is superlative.
