Chicago newspaper columnist Souchak (John Belushi, playing a sort of young, overweight Mike Royko) is a true urbanite who enjoys all the goings-on around City Hall and consumes cigarettes, coffee, and whiskey with abandon and little regard for his health. When his series of stories about a crooked politician backfires, Souchak is dispatched to the Rockies to interview wacky ornithologist Nell (Blair Brown) as a pretext to get him out of town. This unlikely love story never really pays off, largely due to Lawrence Kasdan's contrived script. To their credit, a very subdued Belushi and an appealing Brown do their best to add a patina of light charm to this minor effort, and largely they succeed. Michael Apted (COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER), one of the few British directors who can convey a sense of Americana, does a good job of keeping things going, but even his efforts fall short. leave a comment
