CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE | SPIKLENCI SLASTI

Forget CRASH: David Cronenberg's fevered fender-benders have nothing on the sexual fetishists of Czech animator Jan Svankmajer's imaginative and singularly bizarre live-action feature. Set in Prague, Svankmajer's film follows the lives of six men and women as they set about their daily lives -- lives devoted to the single-minded pursuit of peculiar sexual kinks. One man dons a painstakingly crafted rooster head and wings, flapping his arms while terrorizing an effigy of his neighbor with a boulder. The neighbor, meanwhile, dresses as a dominatrix and bats around an effigy of him. A postal worker inhales grape-sized balls of bread, all secretly rolled while making her appointed rounds, while a magazine vendor watches his favorite newscaster while luxuriating in the many-armed embrace of a Shiva-like electronic pleasure device he's created. The newscaster, in turn, likes having her toes sucked by fish. Rarefied tastes, to say the least; Svankmajer cuts straight through to the secret heart of fetishism, showing that even the most innocuous household objects can radiate sexual possibility. Given the conspiratorial air, the libertines' solitary passions and the recently democratized setting, the film could serve as a tidy sociopolitical metaphor; when the two effigies spring to life, animated through Svankmajer's trademark stop-motion animation, it certainly becomes an artistic one. leave a comment --Ken Fox
